Foxwedge Filly Compared to Melito and Snitzerland

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 27
The most expensive yearling by Foxwedge sold in 2018, two year-old filly Villami made a winning debut at Rosehill on Wednesday earning high praise from her trainer Gerald Ryan.

Villami the most expensive yearling sired by Foxwedge in 2018Unbeaten at her only two previous trials, Villami carried that form forward to raceday and led throughout for Brenton Avdulla to win by a length and a quarter in the 1100 metre fillies maiden running half a second quicker than the colts division won by True Detective.

"She's a very good filly," said Gerald Ryan.

"Eight months ago I thought she was the best two year-old filly I've had since Melito and Snitzerland and nothing I've seen since then has changed my mind.

"She led all the way, and I know it's a cliché, but I do think she's better with a sit and will be better at three."

Villami was purchased for $425,000 at the Magic Millions from the Cressfield draft by Gerald Ryan and runs for a David Raphael managed syndicate and her trainer.

"She was bought from Magic Millions and initially we were going to get ready for that race, but I rang David (Raphael) and told him she's too good for that, let's aim towards the autumn.

"We have a huge opinion of her."

Bred by Cressfield, she is the seventh winner from seven foals to race from Group III winning Dehere (USA) mare Galapagos Girl, a half-sister to blue hen Procrastinate, the dam of champion filly Laisserfaire and four other stakes-winners.

Cressfield sold her yearling half-sister by Headwater at Magic Millions earlier this year for $55,000.

Now based at Woodside Park in Victoria after starting his career with Newgate Farm, Foxwedge has already sired Group I winning fillies Foxplay, Volpe Veloce and Urban Fox with Villami sure to be trying to emulate their success.
