Foxwedge Mare Too Strong in Triscay Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday February 16

Woodside Park Stud did not have to wait long for the first dividend on their 2019 recruit Foxwedge whose progressive daughter, Alassio, opened her stakes account in Saturday's Group III Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

The lightly raced 5yo mare was coming off a third in the Group II Breeders Classic (1200m) won by Champagne Cuddles at Warwick Farm last Saturday.

Ridden by Tim Clark for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Alassio defeated the favourite Manicure (Exceed And Excel) by a head with I Am Excited (Snitzel) another two lengths back in third. (photo Steve Hart)

"We thought the back-up would suit her and being back on a firm surface helps," Bott told AAP.

"She didn't quite handle the soft track last week. On the back-up today she was in for the fight and that's what we wanted to see.

"She has shown she is up to the class now."

Her jockey Tim Clark was also buoyed by her fighting spirit.

"She came in rock-hard fit," he said.

"She has been to the beach all week and backed up well.

"I was proud how she dug in late. She is an honest mare and last week was a great result for her and this is even better."
Purchased by G Waterhouse / J Blaxland for $50,000 out of the Emirates Park draft at session two of the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Alassio advances her record to 5 wins, 1 second and 1 third from 9 starts with earnings of $241,065.

Emirates Park purchased Alassio's stakes-winning dam Cinque for $150,000 at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale when carrying the Triscay Stakes winner.

From a strong international family, Cinque went back through the ring 2016 and 2018 making $10,000 and $2,000 respectively. She did not have a live foal for four years before foaling a Denman filly last spring.

A daughter of Red Ransom (USA), Cinque is also the dam of the Redoute's Choice mare Sport Chic who is the dam of Dundeel's multiple stakes-placed 3yo Dealmaker.

Alassio becomes the 12th stakes-winner for Foxwedge (pictured). The son of Fastnet Rock was the foundation stallion at Newgate Farm but after seven seasons he will head south this year to Woodside Stud where he will stand alongside Written Tycoon, Tosen Stardom, Cable Bay and Rich Enuff.
