Surprise packet has owners going more ballistic than ballistic

Clinton Payne - Thursday August 17

Randwick trainer Peter Snowden worked his way to the top of his profession so he takes great delight overseeing the rise of a promising stayer that will tackle Saturday class for the first time at Randwick this weekend.

More Moet is the horse in question and he'll contest the Randwick Mayor's Benchmark 89 Handicap (2400m).

"He's a great story this horse," Peter Snowden said.

"There's a lot of first timers in the ownership group and they are just normal everyday people.

"They get to the races and they're just so happy to watch him go around.

"When he's run placings', they've gone ballistic so you can imagine how excited they've been when he's won and now he's strung a couple of wins together."

More Moet's wins have come over 2000m at Kembla and most recently when overcoming traffic issues to score in benchmark 70 grade over 2200m at Warwick Farm on August 2.

"The other day at Warwick Farm was the first time I'd asked him to go beyond that and he was held up at a vital stage, only got out late and then dashed to the line," Snowden said.

"Normally I wouldn't raise the bar and jump in grade this quickly but this 2000m record is excellent.

"I'd not expected this six months ago but I'm going with the horse and there's a lot of encouraging signs with what he's doing.

"The 2400m is another step up for him but my gut tells me its within reach and I want to get a guide going forward to what sort of races I can look at for him."

For Snowden, More Moet doesn't only give him joy for the thrills he's given his team of owners with the experienced conditioner also enjoying the challenges of applying his horse mastery skills.

"I don't have many stayers but I absolutely love working with horses like this bloke and Plot Twist," he said. "I really enjoy the whole different mindset.

"I had stayers before, I won Derbies and Oaks' with Darley but here it is different.

"Here they are long term investments rather than win a Derby and go to stud or sell them.

"Here I've got them forever so I give them plenty of time to mature, wait until they're five or six before you really put the acid on them.

"His work's been perfect leading up to Saturday, he looks great and he's got no weight getting in on the limit. I expect him to run well."

More Moet will be ridden on Saturday by Tim Clark and he is a $6.50 chance behind the dominate $1.55 odds-on favourite Sayed.
