One To Watch - Werribee

Mark Smith - Tuesday December 25

Connections of Twinspier received a real Christmas Eve gift when the Savabeel gelding powered home from last on the turn to break his maiden over 1420 metres at Werribee.

With Regan Bayliss in the saddle, the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young 3yo was restrained at the back of the seven-horse field before unleashing a sprint that carried him to a 3-length win over Fast And Ready (More Than Ready) with Epaulette Prince (Epaulette) a further two and a quarter lengths back in third.

He was making his first start in seven weeks after finishing out of a place when making his career debut on a heavy track at Donald.

"He didn't handle the wet track on debut at Donald. We were pretty confident going into today and it's great to get another win for (part-owner) Tommy Heptinstall, he's a great supporter of the stable and we really appreciate his help," stable representative Sam McLeod told racing.com.

"He's your typical Savabeel. We'll look to get him over a trip.

"First up today he had that little turn of foot and it was a nice ride by Regan, he got on to the back of the right horse and got the job done."

Bayliss said he has been impressed by how Twinspier has progressed.

"He's a nice horse, he's really matured this preparation," Bayliss said. "I got to sit on his back a couple of weeks ago and he gave me a nice feel. It was a good sign today because he is going to get over a lot further."

Twinspier was a $100,000 purchase by Busuttin Racing out of the Bradbury Park draft at the 2017 NZB Premier Yearling Sale.

He is the first foal of the talented Encosta de Lago mare Impulsive Dream who placed in the Group II QTC Sires' Produce Stakes and Group III BTC Champagne Classic.

Herself a $260,000 Magic Millions Yearling, Impulsive Dream is a half-sister to Listed winner Hillfa (Danehill) out of the stakes-placed Slip Anchor mare Fayfa (IRE) who is a half-sister to the Group 1 Prix de Diane heroine Rafha the dam of Invincible Spirit.

Another half-sister to Fayfa and Rafha is the stakes-placed Alanood (Danehill) who is the dam of Coolmore Stud's young gun Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) who has his first crop of yearlings at the sales in the new year.

This family is also enjoying success at the moment through the Group II Eight Carat Stakes winner Contessa Vanessa (Bullbars) who recently finished second in the Group II Kamada Park Challenge Stakes at Awapuni.

Another young star from the family is the More Than Ready (USA) mare Uni who reeled off four consecutive wins culminating in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar on December 2.

Impulsive Dream has a two-year-old full-brother to Twinspier named Savoury who was purchased by Bjorn Baker for $200,000 at the 2018 NZB Premier Yearling Sale.

A yearling sister to that pair was catalogued for the Inglis Classic Sale in February but has been withdrawn.
