$50,000 Filly Beats $1.1million Colt

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday August 16
With race fitness on her side and a pull in the weights, talented Your Song filly Songlike proved too good for stakes-placed Snitzel colt Showtime, who will have to wait for another day to break his maiden.

They fought out the finish of the 1100 metre three year-old maiden at Canterbury on Wednesday, with the Bjorn Baker trained filly leading throughout and kicking on to win by a length over Showtime, a $1.1 million Magic Millions purchase.

Second at her two previous starts this campaign behind promising types Marble and Alizee, Songlike was overdue for a win and will now be onwards and upwards.

A $50,000 purchase for Bjorn Baker Racing/Blandford Bloodstock from the Widden Stud draft at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, Songlike was bred by Widden in partnership and is the second winner from Mabkhara, a half-sister by Anabaa (USA) to Group III placed Lucky Eighty Eight.

Mabkhara comes from the Nasmah branch of the Easy Date family that has produced Group I winners Rewaaya and Sense of Occasion.

Songlike is the 14th first crop winner for Widden Stud's Group I winning Fastnet Rock son Your Song, who is fully booked this spring at a fee of $22,000.

Footnote: Your Song later added a 15th winner to his tally when three year-old gelding Littlebitfunny saluted at Balaklava at his fourth start.
