Famed horseman and renowned horsebreaker Max Crockett passed away at age 74 on Sunday.
Born in Sydney, Crockett was the horse breaker of choice for legendary trainers like Bart Cummings, Tommy Smith, Neville Begg and Jack Denham, and is said to have introduced a saddle to more than 7000 thoroughbreds.
He also spent time working for auction house Inglis and enjoyed success a trainer, winning races at each of Sydney's metropolitan courses.
Fittingly, his last runner was a winner – Mackellar's Love at Orange on November 9.
"I watched the race in the nursing home with Dad and that was a great thrill for him," Crockett's daughter Yasmin said in a statement.
"You don't realise how well-respected someone is until they are gone."
Crockett's son Cameron has followed a similar path to his father, breaking-in horses for Gooree Stud before making the switch to training in 2015.
"I would like to thank everyone for condolences for Dad. He was a special man who touched the lives of many," Cameron said.
"Following a service in Mudgee, we plan to spread his ashes at Randwick Racecourse and the old Inglis sales complex."
A 'celebration of Max's life' will be held at Mudgee racecourse on Tuesday December 19, commencing at 1pm.
