Deep Field's Hawker Hurricane Powers Home in Clockwise Classic

Mark Smith - Saturday November 24

The Deep Field debutant Hawker Hurricane will head to the Magic Millions 2yo Classic in January with a favourites chance following a strong win in Saturday's $200,000 Magic Millions Clockwise Classic at Ballarat.

Ridden by Mark Zahra for trainer Michael Moroney, Hawker Hurricane had just two behind him coming into the straight. Zahra saved ground when finding a narrow seam between runners and once he found some daylight, Hawker Hurricane kept up a strong gallop to defeat the royally-bred Charvet (Zoustar) by three-quarters of a length with the winner's stablemate Alburq (Rubick) a head back in third.

Zahra said the son of Deep Field still has plenty to learn.

"He's a very green horse. Luckily, I drew well because I was able to save ground," Zahra said.

"He showed a good turn of foot once I got out. I liked him in his jump out - I just needed a bit of luck today and I got it in the finish.

"He doesn't know what he is doing yet and he's going to be a really nice horse in the autumn."

Bred by Heath Newton, Hawker Hurricane (pictured right as a yearling ) was a $150,000 Gold Coast purchase out of the Widden Stud draft by Paul Moroney Bloodstock.

He is the first foal of the Bernardini (USA) mare Bernarsini who is a half-sister to 2-time Group III Sandown Classic winner Mahhisara (More Than Ready) and Group III MRC Moonga Stakes winner Ulmann (Sebring).

Willow Park Stud will offer a filly from the first crop of I Am Invincible's speedy son Super One out of Bernarsini at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January (Lot 916)

Bernarsini foaled a colt by Shalaa (IRE) on October 28.

Deep Field has another promising performer in the Gary Portelli-trained Spaceboy who ran out of gas at his career debut when second behind the new Golden Slipper favourite Tassort at Rosehill Gardens earlier in the day.

Buyers in the market for a Deep Field yearling will be spoilt for choice with 42 catalogued for the Gold Coast and 36 heading to the Inglis Classic.
