Godolphin sent Hartnell to Caulfield on Tuesday morning to give the import a look at the track ahead of Saturday's Group II PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m).
Hartnell has raced 19 times in Australia but never at Caulfield and trainer James Cummings wanted Hartnell to get a feel for the circuit before Saturday's race.
Hartnell galloped over 1400m on the course proper and assistant trainer David Charles said the work went as planned.
"James just wanted him to have a look around because he'd not been to Caulfield before," Charles said.
"He handled it all without any trouble and his work was first class. He got into a beautiful rhythm and was on the right leg all the way around."
Hartnell last raced when finishing runner-up to Winx in the Group I Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick in April and goes into Saturday's 1400m contest having had one jumpout over 800m at Flemington on August 4.
Craig Williams will ride Hartnell on Saturday and Charles said the seven-year-old was in great order and ready to run well.
"We're looking for a nice first-up effort on Saturday, he's ready to run well, but his targets are still a little way down the track." Charles said.
Godolphin also had intended Group III Vain Stakes runner Veranillo and Regal Roller Stakes runner Souchez gallop at Caulfield.
