A colt by first-season sire sensation KINGMAN from an Australian bred stakes-winner topped proceedings on the opening day of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale when selling for 750,000 guineas, the second highest price ever achieved at this fixture.
Turnover on the opening day fell slightly short of last year's record-breaking figures with the clearance rate nudging 90% and small declines in average and median. Fourteen lots sold for 200,000 guineas or more whilst 45 realised six figure sales.
Kingman Colt Sells for 750,000 Guineas
The Irish 2,000 Guineas winner KINGMAN has made an exciting start to his stallion career at Juddmonte Farms. His first crop of two-year-olds have produced five Group/Listed winners to date including the 2,000 Guineas prospects PERSIAN KING and SANGARIUS and the Group 2 Coventry Stakes winner CALYX.
Given his start, yearlings by KINGMAN have naturally been in high demand at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and the colt out of the Group-placed stakes-winning GALILEO mare REEM proved no exception, selling to the bid of John Gosden for 750,000 guineas. The vanquished included David Redvers, who was standing with Sheikh Fahad, Charlie Gordon-Watson with Saeed Suhail, and Alastair Donald.
The colt hails from the family of Champion two and three-year-old RODRIGO DE TRIANO and is from Reem, who was bred in Australia by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and conceived in 2006, which was the last year Galileo shuttled to Australia.
He was consigned to the sale from Adrian and Philippa O'Brien's Hazelwood Bloodstock and is the second highest price ever achieved at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
"That was unbelievable," said Adrian O'Brien, manager of the young operation based at Exning, just outside of Newmarket, adding: "It is the first year we are selling stock whom we have been involved with since conception so it is very pleasing.
"We liked Kingman and you do need the stars to align, especially when you are using young stallions who have their first two-year-olds running.
"I was not sure what he would make, we decided to let the market find his value. He has been very popular in the run-up to today, and a lot of the main players were interested - it was just a matter of whether they followed him into the ring - which thank god they did!"
Cheveley Park Buy Pivotal Filly For 425,000 Guineas
Late in the evening Cheveley Park Stud's Chris Richardson secured the PIVOTAL half-sister to the Listed winning THE BROGHIE MAN for 425,000 guineas. In what was a battle of the owner/breeders, Richardson secured the filly at the expense of the Niarchos Family's Racing Manager Alan Cooper, sat with Electra Niarchos.
"She is a lovely filly," said Richardson. "It was actually a foal share and we have bought out Whitsbury. It is cross we know very well - Pivotal and Dutch Art.
"Pivotal is now 25 years old, but he has been broodmare sire of six Group 1 winners this year and sire of Lightning Spear."
The filly is out of the DUTCH ART mare SUELITA who consignor Whitsbury Manor Stud raced and stud manager Ed Harper deflected the praise to his father, Chris.
"Dad actually went rogue on me and bought her without any discussion!" smiled Harper the younger. "Actually it is the last horse that Dad bought - so it does prove the wise head he has! I guess I owe him a drink..."
She is the second-highest priced filly sold at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
Pinhook Success for Siyouni Colt
The SIYOUNI colt out of the Listed winning SHAMARDAL mare PELERIN provided his owners with a bountiful return on their investment when selling to SackvilleDonald's Alastair Donald for 300,000 guineas. Consigned by Kenilworth House Stud, the colt was purchased at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for just 80,000 guineas by Late Late Bloodstock.
"He is a lovely, athletic and strong foal," said Gerry Ross, farm manager at Kenilworth. "He was very busy through inspections - and, of course, Siyouni has had another brilliant year, headlined by the wonderful filly Laurens, but there is a lot of his dam sire Shamardal in him too."
Paca Paca Farm Buy Kitten's Joy Colt for 280,000 Guineas
Harry Sweeney's Paca Paca Farm in Japan signed for lot 683, the chesnut colt by KITTEN'S JOY at 280,000 guineas, providing his owners with a significant pinhooking profit in the process. The son of the SUPER SAVER mare SAVE OUR OCEANS was purchased as a foal in the US for just $77,000 by Jamie Railton who consigned him today.
"We found him on top of the hill at Keeneland," said Railton, "and he is a pretty spectacular horse. I am so pleased for all those who have invested, trusted me with their money – I am so pleased it has worked out."
SAVE OUR OCEANS won one race at three and is a daughter of ATLANTIC OCEAN, a dual Grade 3 winner.
Mains Buys Mastercraftsman Colt for 280,000 Guineas
Philippa Mains secured the MASTERCRAFTSMAN colt out of the ROYAL APPLAUSE mare SELVA REAL for 280,000 guineas, on behalf of US-based owner Jon Kelly.
"He is a gorgeous, gorgeous son of Mastercraftsman, and he goes to Jessica Harrington - let's hope Jessie can do with this Mastercraftsman as she did this year with Alpha Centauri!" smiled Mains.
Mains, who previously assisted Amanda Skiffington, has headed out into business herself.
"I won't be doing too much agency work, rather the plan is to work with racing clubs and syndicates," she explained. "I am setting up Main Line Racing, which is to be a leasing racing club run in association with Whitsbury Manor Stud. It is launching in November."
The sale was a mouth-watering return on investment for consignor Redpender Stud's Jimmy Murphy who purchased SELVA REAL in France in 2017 for 40,000 euros, carrying this MASTERCRAFTSMAN colt. The ROYAL APPLAUSE mare is out of the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes second SILCA CHIAVE, herself a half-sister to the Group 1 Prix Morny winner SILCA'S SISTER and Champion mare GOLDEN SILCA.
