Media Release - Friday October 12

Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale came to a close following the third and final session with a record turnover of 106 million guineas, and a decade-best clearance rate of 86%. Fourteen lots topped the million guinea mark whilst 59 lots sold for 500,000 guineas of more.

Newsells Continue Strong Sale with 1.2 Million Guineas Dubawi Filly

Dubawi filly from Giant's PlayThe leading consignor for the sale was the Jacobs Family's Newsells Park Stud whose DUBAWI daughter of GIANTS PLAY sold for 1,200,000 guineas on the final day. The Grade 2 winning daughter of GIANT'S CAUSEWAY has already produced two Group/Listed performers and is a daughter of the Group 1 Fillies' Mile heroine PLAYFUL ACT, herself a sibling to the Group 1 winners NATHANIEL and GREAT HEAVENS.

The filly was purchased by Stroud Coleman for 1,200,000 guineas and Stud Manager Julian Dollar was naturally delighted;

"We thought we'd brought our strongest draft here," said Dollar.

"It is both humbling and gratifying that the purchasers have felt the same. It is a reflection of the great job done by the team at home."

Newsells Park Stud sold three million guineas lots this week with their draft of 22 lots realising a total of 11,055,000 guineas.

Galileo Half-Sister to Ivawood Sells for 1.2 million guineas.

David and Diane Nagle's Barrownstown Stud have enjoyed a fruitful week at Tattersalls with the six lots they have consigned this week realising just shy of 4 million guineas. Leading the way on the final day was the GALILEO half-sister to the Group 2 July Stakes and Richmond Stakes winner IVAWOOD. The daughter of the RED RANSOM mare KEENES ROYALE was knocked down to Anthony Stroud for 1,200,000 guineas after he saw off the efforts of underbidder Kerri Radcliffe.

"She is a lovely filly," said David Nagle. "She is very athletic and racey, we liked her a lot. Hopefully, she will be lucky for her new connections.

"The mare had a Galileo filly this year and is back in-foal to Galileo."

Sea The Stars Colt Makes 900,000 Guineas

French consignor Haras du Mezeray had their SEA THE STARS colt out of ELLE SAME realise 900,000 guineas to the bid of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock. The Listed placed daughter of SAMUM is out of the Champion German mare and producer ELLE DANZIG, winner of three Group 1s and dam of no less than six Group/Listed performers.

"This colt was not forward enough for the August sale in France, and he has done very well through the summer," reported Charles-Henri de Moussac when explaining why the French-based stud has brought this colt to sell in Book 1. "We bought over a draft last year and we have some to sell in Book 2 next week also - we are looking to spread the risk a little. We have had a very good trip over!

"We bought the mare for our client for 300,000 euros and the first foal has been retained.

Shadwell Buy Invincible Spirit Colt for 900,000 Guineas

The fireworks continued well into the evening on the final day of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale which Shadwell Estates' buying the INVINCIBLE SPIRIT colt from Meon Valley Stud for 900,000 guineas. The colt is out of the MONTJEU mare MONZZA, a daughter of Meon Valley's Group 1 winning mare ZEE ZEE TOP and a sister to their Group 1 winner IZZI TOP.

"He is a very well-bred horse, by a fabulous stallion and Sheikh Hamdan liked him," said Angus Gold of Shadwell.

"We have Emaraaty [a son of Zee Zee Top], and he has plenty of ability and is a good horse - he has just touched down in the US."

Chairman's Statement

At the conclusion of the 2018 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

"It is an extraordinary statistic that for seven consecutive years Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale has produced record turnover climbing from just over 50 million guineas in 2011 to this year's new record of more than 105 million guineas. We genuinely believed that last year's phenomenal October Book 1 would not be matched for a very long time, but yet again Europe's top thoroughbred breeders have sent us the most outstanding collection of yearlings and buyers from throughout the world have responded accordingly. Quality is the key and Book 1 of the 2018 October Yearling Sale is the finest showcase for the best yearlings by the truly exceptional roster of stallions currently standing in Europe.

"From start to finish there has been fierce international competition for the cream of the European yearling crop top with 14 selling for 1 million guineas or more, an unprecedented 59 breaking the 500,000 guineas mark and the sale producing the world's highest priced yearling for the seventh year in a row. While the 3.5 million guineas sale topping DUBAWI colt out of DAR RE MI and the 3.4 million guineas GALILEO colt out of SHASTYE were the highlights of the past three days, a particular feature of the sale has been the consistent demand in all sectors of the market.

"There is no doubt that the £25,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus brings owners and trainers to the sale who might otherwise look elsewhere and it is no coincidence that the clearance rate of 86% is the best at October Book 1 for more than a decade. To date there have been 127 winners of more than £3 million in Book 1 Bonuses and it is a great endorsement to see pretty well all of the beneficiaries returning to the sale in search of more Bonus winners.

"Books 2, 3 and 4 of the October Yearling Sale start on Monday and we look forward to sustaining the momentum from this week's record-breaking sale."
