Bargain Basement Tassie Purchase Romps in Moloney Stakes

Mark Smith - Sunday September 23

The latest rising star from Tasmania, the 3yo filly Mystic Journey, blew away her opponents in Saturday's Listed Jim Moloney Stakes at Caulfield.

Coming off a luckless fifth at Moonee Valley on August 25, Mystic Journey was settled just off the pace by Anthony Darmanin to power away by two and a quarter lengths from Spanish Whisper (Lope de Vega) with Tahitian Dancer (Dawn Approach) another neck away third. (photo Grant Courtney)

Trainer Adam Trinder said connections would have to decide whether to stump up a $27,000 late entry fee for the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield next month.

"We came here with guarded confidence," Trinder said.

"She was 1400 metres for the first time in her career.

"She doesn't hold a Guineas entry but we've ticked off a box at 1400 metres so we'll have to sit down and have a discussion whether we put in a late entry.

"That's obviously a different class, Group 1 class compared to the (Listed) stakes race today, but she was good and strong today and It's a terribly pleasing result."

With her second stakes win, Mystic Journey advancer her record to 5 wins from 8 starts with earnings of $194,850.

That's a grand return on the $11,000 her trainer needed to secure the daughter of Needs Further out of the Armidale Stud draft at the 2017 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale.

She is the best of three winners out of the Colombia mare White Gold who is a sister to the stakes-placed Oronero.

A full-sister to Mystic Journey made $55,000 to the bid of Ross Wilkinson at this year's Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale.

White Gold was not covered in 2016 but visited Fighting Sun last spring.
