Lee Curtis has announced the retirement of his former star filly Lasqueti
Spirit, who will always be remembered for her unforgettable VRC Oaks win in
2016 as a $101 chance.
The daughter of Beneteau only won the one race from her 22 starts, but it was a
Group I win many will never forget.
"We planned to roll along in front, hoping to break a few and going down the
back I just tried to have her in a rhythm, keep her flowing like I was at home
just having a gallop around the track," winning rider Brenton Avdulla said
after the race.
"I asked her to quicken at around the 1000, then again at the 800 and I was a
bit surprised because I could feel her quicken.
"In the straight I was waiting to hear them coming and it didn't happen.
"At about the 100 I heard Greg Miles (broadcaster)
say I was still in front and I looked up at the screen, saw the gap so I stood
up and took a bow."
Lasqueti Spirit might have only won one race but she was also Group I placed in
the ATC Australian Oaks and Chipping Norton Stakes and retires with earnings just
shy of $1million,
A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase as a yearling, Lasqueti Spirit was raced by
Frank Cook's Mystery Downs and partners.
