Youngstar Chasing an Achievable Double

Tara Madgwick - Saturday June 9
It's 30 years since Bravery achieved the Queensland Oaks / Derby double, a feat the Chris Waller trained filly Youngstar will be attempting later today.

YoungstarFillies have quite a good record in the Queensland Derby with four of them winning the blue riband since Zephyr Zip's feisty little filly Bravery won both back in 1988.

While Camarena (1999) and Dariana (2010) won the Derby without the Oaks, Royal Magic (1992) and Riva San (2008) did the double.

Bravery went on to an exceptional career at stud producing nine foals to race all winners including Group II winner Brave Prince and stakes-winner Valourina, the dam of Group II winners Media and Timbourina. Another of her daughters Springfire has established a branch of Black Type success in Perth for Bob and Sandra Peters with horses like Perfect Jewel, Star Exhibit and Royal Star.

It's rare to pick up a commercial yearling catalogue and not find at least one yearling with Bravery somewhere on the page

Camarena has also made her mark at stud as the dam of Group I winner Camarilla, in turn the dam of Group I winner Guelph.

If Youngstar can win today she'll be adding her name to an elite list of fillies.
