Runaway's first success comes with ease

AAP - Wednesday August 9

Runaway's success to break his maiden at Canterbury has Tulloch Lodge eyeing a possible assault on the Group I Spring Champion Stakes.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt was rarely tested over the 1550 metres on Wednesday to finish ahead of a green Gresham in the five-horse field.

It added to his case made 10 days ago when So You Think colt D'Argento only just managed to run down Runaway in the closing stages of a 1500m race at Randwick.

"He's just strengthening and improving all the time," Bott said.

"We've got the option, now we've won the maiden, to space his runs a little bit and work back from a nice race for him."

Bott nominated the $500,000 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on October 7 as a possible aim.

The three-year-old colt is also among 327 horses nominated for the Group One Caulfield Guineas.

Josh Parr says Runaway doesn't have a brilliant or classic turn of foot but is the "push-button horse" who can be ridden up front, off the speed, stretch out and sprint.

"You can do whatever you want with him," he said.

"The world's his oyster."

Gresham showed he had room for improvement when he needed jockey Tommy Berry's encouragement to secure second ahead of stablemate Augustus.

"He's still very green...but you'll have a good horse in six months," Berry told owners.
