Chix Pic Picture Perfect in Perth Stakes

Mark Smith - Friday March 30

With 16 women owners, the 2yo gelding Chix Pic had an enthusiastic cheer squad for Friday's Listed Iron Jack – Perth Stakes (1100m) at Ascot and he didn't let them down.

The grey son of Patronize led all the way under Joseph Azzopardi to defeat Platoon (Playing God) by two and a quarter lengths with Cup Night (Maschino) one and a half lengths back in third.

It kept the record of Chix Pic at a perfect two for two after breaking his maiden over 1000 metres on the same track on March 14.

The long odds-on favourite Driftstar (Sepoy) was made to work to race on the outside of Chix Pic but he was beaten off shortly after turning in to the straight and weakened to finish a well-beaten fourth.

Trained by David Harrison, Chix Pic will likely take his place in the Karrakatta Plate in a fortnights time.

"It's great for all the girls," Harrison said

"I thought he could do it but I was a bit scared on the wrap for the other horse," Harrison said.

"He's the one to beat in the big one now but you can never be confident in a race like that. You need to draw the right barrier and get the right run on the day. He hasn't done anything wrong.

"He won his trial and his first race when he was a green as grass and he won pretty impressively today."

A $40,000 purchase by his trainer out of the Western Breeders Alliance draft at the 2017 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, Chix Pic is the second foal and second winner out of the Due Sasso mare Sassy Flyer who failed to run a place in her only two starts.

She is a half-sister to stakes-winner McLurch (McFlirt) and Raw Metal (Metal Storm) as well as the stakes-placed McScar (McFlirt).

Sassy Flyer has a yearling colt by Patronize and a colt foal by the Encosta de Lago stallion My Admiration.

She was bred back to Patronize last year.

The third stakes-winner for his sire, Chix Pic (pictured as a yearling) is one of 35 live foals from the eighth and largest crop sired by the Redoute's Choice stallion, Patronize.

A three-quarter brother to Exceed and Excel, Patronize stands at Brent Atwell's Darling View Stud at a fee of $4,400.
