$150,000 Capitalist Colt Tops MM Gold Coast March Day 1

Media Release - Monday March 24

A colt by Golden Slipper winner and Newgate Farm sire Capitalist topped Day One of the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale today.

The colt, a member of the KBL Thoroughbreds draft, attracted strong interest when he was offered as Lot 43 and it took a $150,000 bid from leading bloodstock agent Suman Hedge to secure him.

$150,000 Capitalist colt tops the opening session on Monday.

Hedge, still on cloud nine after the Group One win of Schwarz in Saturday's William Reid Stakes, purchased today's top seller in conjunction with Trilogy Racing.

"He ticked a lot of boxes for us," Hedge said. "The purchaser is Trilogy Racing."

"He's a beautiful Capitalist colt from a good mare in Sold for Song."

The colt is the second foal of his dam Sold for Song, a daughter of Collate who was a multiple stakes winner and group performer.

She is best remembered for winning a Daybreak Lover Stakes and Gold Edition Plate, both at listed level, while her placings included seconds in a Group Two Gilgai in Melbourne and Group Three Gold Coast Guineas.

"We are really happy with how he went," Brad Lowe of KBL Thoroughbreds said. "It was probably a bit above expectations - we thought around $120,000."

"A very good judge bought him in Suman Hedge so he's going to a good home," Lowe added.

Two fillies by champion Eureka Stud based sire Spirit of Boom, himself a former graduate of this sale, were next on the leaderboard, selling for $140,000 each.

$140,000 Spirit of Boom filly from Sweet Dolly.

The Sweet Dolly filly (Lot 56), offered by Daandine Stud was snapped up by Tony Gollan in conjunction with John Foote Bloodstock, while South Africa's Craig Ramsay also went to $140,000 to secure the filly from Williams Bay (Lot 93) from the Warrandale Stud draft.

Suman Hedge teamed up with Grant and Alana Williams from WA to secure the next two top sellers on the day - the Spirit of Boom-Dylan's Deeva colt (Lot 189) for $120,000 and the Brave Smash-Splendora filly (Lot 49) for $110,000. Both those yearlings were sold by Glenlogan Park.

"Today was a very selective day in the market place," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "The right product sold very well with more $100,000 plus horses today than Day One last year and an increase in average."

"The numbers from the middle to top end were quite strong today and it was great to see buyers from China, South Africa, Western Australia and Victoria playing at the top end."

"The significant issue in the market today was the pass in rate. Obviously we want to lift that tomorrow well into the 70s and I think that is possible."

"We have a good line of horses tomorrow. There's great opportunity with the passed in lots from today and I hope that the local market gets behind the product here because QTIS bonuses are sensational and there's plenty to race for here in Queensland."

"Every year this sale produces fantastic horses and they can win a lot of money in QTIS bonuses. They have a great record here on our big The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday and there's a $1.5 million race for Magic Millions QTIS horses."

"There's also the big Jewel Raceday back here (on the Gold Coast) each March at over $2 million and all of the other QTIS bonuses. It's a no-brainer to be here supporting the sale and I urge anyone who isn't here that wants to get involved to get in touch with our team."

"I recommend people to get onto the Magic Millions website and check the photos and videos, of the passed in horses, and those left to offer tomorrow," Bowditch added.
