Coolmore have announced the passing of Kentucky Derby winner and Group I sire Thunder Gulch (USA) who died on Tuesday due to the infirmities of old age at Coolmore America's Ashford Stud.

Coolmore Twitter - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thunder Gulch due to the infirmities of old age. He was a champion on the track and at stud and will be greatly missed.

Thunder GulchKnown for his toughness and fighting qualities, which he passed on to many of his stock, Thunder Gulch was the star of the 1995 Triple Crown races when he won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes and finished third in the Preakness Stakes.

He sired 84 stakes-winners worldwide headed by US superstars Point Given, Spain and Balance, while his early seasons shuttling to Australia produced Group I winners Tempest Morn, Shot of Thunder and Tully Thunder.

Thunder Gulch was also the sire of the dam of 97 stakes-winners worldwide including Australian Group I winner Montoya's Secret.

Thunder Gulch had the honour of topping the 1999 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale when his filly from Dancing Show (USA) sold for $1.2 million.

Thunder Gulch was 26.
