Blue Diamond Market Movers Trying To Defy History

Craig Tompson - Monday February 17

A day out from acceptances, the Monday market moves in the Blue Diamond have come for two horses trying to defy recent history on several fronts, while the favourite has paid up.

The favourite, Deep Field gelding Field Of Play was always going to pay the late entry after his impressive win in the Blue Diamond Prelude however that detail has now been officially taken care of and he sits at the top of the markets at $5 with tab.com.au.

The other significant movers in the market on Monday were the Ciaron Maher trained filly Cherish Me, and Waterhouse/Bott Sydney entrant The Playwright.

Cherish Me is now on the third line of betting at $8, having opened in the morning at $10 but based on the last 15 years, she’s trying to defy some history.

An impressive debut winner of the Geelong Diamond, beating subsequent winner Cavalry Girl, she created a big impression, however in the last 15 years no horse has won the Blue Diamond at their second start.

Tricolours Syndication’s The Playwright is coming off a win in the Group III Widden Stakes, and firmed with tab.com.au on Monday from $18 to $11.

If you want the last 15 years stats on the job ahead for her, no winner has come off a Sydney lead up run, and going into the race at her fifth start is something no winner has done either.

The last 15 winners were either having start three or start four. 12 of them came out of the Prelude lead up races.

There’s hope in everything though!

For Cherish Me it lays with Redoute’s Choice.

He won the Blue Diamond at his second start having won on debut only seven days prior.

A stunning effort really but we all know how that story played out. If you don’t here’s his Wikipedia page.

For The Playwright, she can take strength from the fact not many Sydney trained horses run in the Blue Diamond and stablemate Lady Of Camelot missed by a mere head last year

The Blue Diamond field and barrier draw will be finalised on Tuesday morning.
