TJ the Goal for Redzel

Media Release - Monday March 12
REDZEL will head straight to the TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick on April 7 after dominating the Group 2 Challenge Stakes on Saturday, winning the race in track record time for the 1000m.

Redzel won in track record time on SaturdayRedzel now holds two track records at Sydney's premier race track, with the five-year-old also claiming the 1100m record in The Shorts in September last year on his way to victory in the $10 Million The Everest in October. He is believed to be the only horse in the modern era to hold two track records at the same City track.

In collecting a further $289,000 in prizemoney, Redzel's career earnings have shot through the $8 Million mark as he recorded a seventh victory in his last eight starts.

Peter Snowden was delighted with what he saw, and said the son of Snitzel will head straight to the TJ Smith, rather than heading to Melbourne for Group 1 William Reid on March 23.

"You just can't believe how quick he ran. Fifty five and a half seconds – I just can't imagine a horse doing that over 1000m but he did it and he did it well," said Snowden.

"What I like is that he was really good through the line. He had a very fast pace to chase and he was really solid. He started to pull away again towards the end and made some very good horses look very average.

"I thought his run at Flemington was excellent and he was superb again today. We can all head towards the TJ [Smith] in the months' time.

"We've done it before running a month between runs and we can get him really good order. We'll give him a barrier trial just to top him up, but we'll concentrate on the TJ back here next month."
