Juvenile Trial Watch - Randwick

Breednet - Tuesday January 14

There were three trial heats for two-year-olds between Randwick and Newcastle on Tuesday featuring first season sires Ole Kirk and King’s Legacy, while we saw a Golden Slipper favourite out for a look.

Heat nine at Randwick saw Gimcrack Stakes winner and current second-favourite for the Golden Slipper, Bel Merci (Extreme Choice x Bel Mer) having her first outing leading into her autumn campaign.

Looking to be sweating freely the John Thompson trained filly cruised along up front and was let coast to the line under zero pressure from Chad Schofield, being passed in the final strides by stablemate Open Secret.

It was the first public outing for Open Secret, a filly by King’s Legacy from Bel Esprit mare Vain Elaine.

From the family of former VRC Oaks winner Richfield Lady, she was a $150,000 buy for John Thompson and Boomer Bloodstock from Middlebrook Valley Lodge at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Wootton Bassett filly Mythology also caught the eye at her second trial, making nice ground under her own steam for third.

She was a $400,000 buy for the James Harron Bloodstock/Michael Freedman Racing Filly Partnership from Kia Ora Stud at Magic Millions Gold Coast.

In the other fillies heat, Bellazaine was nice in winning at her first look since finishing seventh in the Gimcrack Stakes on debut.

By Zousain out of Benella, Bellazaine was a $160,000 buy for Gai Waterhouse / Adrian Bott / Kestrel Thoroughbreds from Widden Stud at Inglis Classic.

She has a half-sister by Supido heading to Inglis Classic as Lot 63 in February.

Had It All (2f Zoustar x Invictus Salute) a $950,000 yearling having her first outing after fifth to Icarian Dream on debut finished second, while Autumn Blonde (2f The Autumn Sun x Tall Blonde) was a nice third at her first appearance since well beaten in the Gimcrack Stakes at her only run but has looked promising in trials.

In the only heat for colts at Randwick, well bred colt Anarchist was impressive at his second trial and looks ready to go to the races.

By Exceed And Excel, he is the first foal of Group I NZ Thousand Guineas winner Media Sensation.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, he was a $550,000 buy for the James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership from Sledmmere Stud at Inglis Easter.

At Newcastle, first season sire Ole Kirk produced another one to show potential in the filly Odaka.

Trained by Kris Lees, she’s out of Ballet Rose, a half-sister to Group I NZ Thousand Guineas winner King’s Rose.

She was passed in short of reserve when offered by Vinery Stud at Inglis Easter however now runs for an ownership group including Kia Ora Stud and Neil Werrett.
