Written By Puts Them to The Sword In Blue Diamond

Mark Smith - Saturday February 24

Saturday's $1,500,000 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield was considered one of the most open in years however the Grahame Begg trained Written By put them to the sword.

Caught wide from an outside barrier, Jordan Childs put Written By into the race on the point of the turn before giving them the slip to defeat Enbihaar (Magnus) by two and a half lengths with Oohood (I Am Invincible) a long head away third. (photo Grant Courtney).

The son of Written Tycoon is now three for three with earnings soaring to $1,133,000.

It was the first Group 1 for Jordon Childs whose father Greg won the 1992 Blue Diamond on Riva Diva as well as having the sit on such luminaries as Sunline and Northerly.

"Words can't really describe it. It's fantastic," Jordan Childs said.

"Growing up and starting out through the ranks all you want to do is be riding on the big days and win Group 1's. To win my first in the Blue Diamond, it's fantastic."

Bred by Begg's father Neville, Written By is a half-brother to three winners. He was consigned to the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale by Basinghall Farm but failed to make his $200,000 reserve.

"It's a bit of a watershed moment, actually," Begg said.

"He doesn't know how to lay down.

"Three runs for three wins it's pretty special.

"I just knew after his first-up run (in the Blue Diamond Prelude) he would just improve leaps and bounds.

"He's just had the best couple of weeks since the Prelude and his work on Monday morning had to be seen to be believed."

Begg said he would not commit to heading to Sydney for the Golden Slipper. He will monitor the horse over the next few days to see how he pulls up.

Written By is out of the winning Tobougg mare Yau Chin, who was purchased by Neville Begg for just $3,000 at the 2007 Scone Yearling Sale.

Written By adds the first black-type in five generations, dating back to the Kaoru Star mare No Finer a sister to the top-class racehorses Marceau, Zasu and Joy Love and the dam of four stakes winners including the Group 1 Australian Guineas winner and top-class sire Pins and the Group II Shannon Stakes winner Nips.

Yau Chin has a yearling brother to Written By and a colt foal by Fiorente (IRE).

She was bred back to Stratum Star last spring.

Written Tycoon has 47 lots catalogued for the Inglis Premier and eight at Easter.,
