Success Continues for NZB Book Two

Media Release - Thursday February 1

Selling from the first day of Karaka 2018's Book 2 has contributed to a phenomenal new overall Sales Series aggregate, reaching heights not seen since 2010 to sit at $90,052,000.

134 of today's 181 lots sold for receipts of $6,353,000 delivering a respectable clearance rate of 74%.

Per Incanto colt from Lago RiderProven Group 1 sire Per Incanto got off to a roaring start with Highden Park presenting the highest-priced yearling (Lot 885) who went to the $200,000 bid of Upper Bloodstock. Having secured three colts during the Book 1 Sale, the Upper Bloodstock partners were active again securing the son of Encosta de Lago mareLago Rider.

With 14 yearlings sold at an average of $63,036, Per Incanto is third on the leading sires by average table (with three or more sold) but leads by aggregate with receipts totalling $882,500.

Little Avondale Stud principal Sam Williams was pleased with their resident stallion.

"He has had an absolutely massive sale so far," he said. "He had Lanciato win a stakes race in Australia just 24 hours before the sale started which was just gold.

"That really reinforced to the Australian buyers that he is a serious horse they should be looking at."

Westbury Stud's popular stallion Reliable Man is leading the sires table by average for four horses at an average of $66,250, including local trainer Shaune Ritchie bidding $110,000 forLot 872– a colt consigned by The Oaks Stud. Their other resident sire, Swiss Ace, joins the table as the second leading sire by average with his progeny also well-received selling five at an average of $65,000.

The second highest price of the day came atLot 766when Waterford Bloodstock went to the bid of $160,000 to secure the colt by Proisir (read here). Mapperley Stud consigned the son of Rich Hill Stud's first season sire and Mapperley's boss Simms Davison was confident he would see a good result with the colt.

"I think he has definitely benefitted from the new structure of the sale as he probably could have gone into the Book 1 catalogue and got a bit lost there, but in Book 2 he was one of the stand-out lots."

Proisir also featured earlier in the day when Hong Kong's Tartan Meadow Bloodstock placed the final bid of $90,000 onLot 812. With nine yearlings sold at an average of $47,556 he is second on the Book 2 first season sire table by average.

Another top-class yearling was presented with Curraghmore's filly (Lot 807) who is by Windsor Park Stud's new recruit, Charm Spirit. Knocked down to the $100,000 bid of John Chalmers Bloodstock, she is a granddaughter of the Group winner Spring. Three Charm Spirit yearlings were sold today at an average of $51,667 cementing his position as the leading first season sire by average.

Monovale Farm, producers of Karaka graduate and 2016 Karaka Million 2YO winnerXiong Feng(NZ) (Iffraaj), had further success today finishing as the leading vendor by average with three lots sold at an average of $64,167.

Prominent buyers on the first day of Book 2 included leading buyer Waterford Bloodstock, who purchased in partnership at Book 1, placing the final bid on three yearlings today for a total of $235,000. Another active buyer throughout Book 1 was bloodstock agent Bruce Perry who added a further three purchases for $210,000 with his highest bid $85,000 forLot 816.

Closing the top three buyers was Hong Kong-based Upper Bloodstock with their one, bold bid of $200,000 forLot 885. Other Hong Kong buyers to feature in the top 10 today include Mr P Ho (two for $155,000) and Paul Chow's Tartan Meadow Bloodstock (two for $150,000).
