The
powerful Darren Weir stable carried out a successful raid on the $100,000
Hobart Guineas in Tasmania on Sunday with victory going to lightly raced three
year-old Wolfendale.
The son of Astronomer Royal (USA) had won two of his three previous starts and
scored a half length win for Dean Yendall in the 2100 metre staying test.
Retained to race by his breeders, Wolfendale is pictured here as a foal at
Miranda Park in Victoria.
With three wins and a second from just five starts, Wolfendale is the best of
three winners from Skibo, a well-related half-sister to the dam of Group II
winner Dixie Blossoms from the family of Group I New Zealand Derby winner
Zonda, another Kiwi Group I winner in Surprize Surprize and high class Group II
winning stayer Magnolia Hall.
He is the fifth stakes-winner for former Victorian shuttler Astronomer Royal, a
son of champion sire Danzig.
