Stakes racing on the horizon for impressive Crown Witness

A debut winner at Sandown last month, Crown Witness was well supported in betting on Saturday before taking out the Winter Lodge Handicap.

Ridden by apprentice Ben Thompson, Crown Witness ($3.50) scored by a half-length from Madeenaty ($3.40) with the $3.30 favourite Chateau Griffo 1-3/4 lengths away third.

The win of Crown Witness provided Thompson with back-to-back wins after he scored on Hell Or Highwater in the New Season Handicap.

Webb said he would monitor the filly but suggested the Group Three Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 19 was a suitable target for Crown Witness.

"From early days she's been the best young horse in the place and she's gone on with it," Webb said.

"She's been in the system a fair while so we'll gauge where we are at.

"There's the Quezette in two weeks and I think she would be brilliant over 1100 metres around Caulfield.

"I thought the leader (Madeenaty) had skipped away then but she was brilliant to the line, as she was at Sandown."

Webb said even though Crown Witness was bred to be a sprinter and built like one, he expects the filly to handle 1200m and could possibly extend her best form to 1400m.
