One To Watch - Newcastle

Mark Smith - Thursday August 29

Given 17 weeks off after a winning debut over 1200m on Wagga Town Plate Day in May, Snow In May overcame a troubled run to keep her record perfect in Thursday's Davali Thoroughbreds Hcp (1200m) at Newcastle.

Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy for John O'Shea and Tom Charlton, The Autumn Sun filly found a seam at the 200m to defeat the 4-year-old Astern mare Toy Story by a length with the 3-year-old Sooboog gelding Highly Tempted the same distance back in third.

"It was a tiny bit messy," McEvoy admitted.

"We jumped and held our spot, and they went a bit quicker at halfway, so I let her quicken up underneath me. The one in front of me began to wander around and was stopping and I had to bump one to get in the clear.

"To her credit, she lost momentum but soon regained it and hit the line."

Bred by Woodpark Stud and consigned by Attunga Stud to the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Snow In May was a $150,000 purchase for John O'Shea Racing / Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA).

The daughter of The Autumn Sun is the first foal of the top-class Siyouni (FR) mare See You Soon, who missed a place once in her five-start career.

Snow In May a $150,000 Inglis Easter yearling

See You Soon won the Kirkham Plate at Randwick on debut, defeating Dame Giselle, who would then defeat See You Soon at her next two starts in the $1 million Golden Gift and the Group II Reisling Stakes.

See You Soon finished midfield in Farnan's Group 1 Golden Slipper before rounding out her two-year-old season and race career with a third in the Group II Percy Sykes won by Away Game.

See You Soon has a 2-year-old sister to Snow In May and, after missing to Street Boss (USA) to northern hemisphere time last April, was exported to France.
