One to Watch – Bendigo

Tara Madgwick - Sunday August 18

Debut three year-old winners by Rosemont Stud’s Cox Plate winning sire Shamus Award are always interesting and particularly at the start of spring when they are bred on one of his most successful nicks that enjoys 100% success.

Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr, Captain Barbossa was priced to run well on debut against older rivals over 1400m and made a good impression under Blake Shinn.

He was allowed to find his feet early and then when angled into the clear as the widest runner in the straight he powered to the line to win by a length and a half.

Captain Barbossa was a $200,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Blueblood Thoroughbreds (Australia) / Mick Price Racing from the Newhaven Park draft and was a successful pinhook having been bough initially for $160,000 from Burnewang North at the Inglis Great Southern Sale by Arrow Park Bloodstock.

He is the second winner from Fabulosa, a placed daughter of Group III winner Absolutelyfabulous, whose grand-dam is Group I MRC Oakleigh Plate winner Scarlet Bisque.

Captain Barbossa is the seventh winner from seven to race for Shamus Award bred from mares by More Than Ready (USA), so the nick is 100% success and those winners include Group I winner Media Award, Group III winner Mimi’s Award and Group III placed Need New Friends.

Shamus Award was in great shape at the Rosemont Stud open day last week and has two big crops of two and three year-olds to run for him this season, so looks great value this year at $38,500.
