Spring and Juvenile Trial Watch

Tara Madgwick - Friday July 26

A set of trials at Warwick Farm on Friday featured some well-established spring contenders stepping out as well as a good selection of juvenile heat winners that included Zousain filly Drifting, who won the Group III ATC Magic Night Stakes in the autumn.

Also in action was Group I ATC Sires Produce Stakes winner Manaal, who went around in a heat with older Group and Listed horses over 900m. The Michael Freedman trained Tassort filly was always out for a soft trial and finished a closing fourth under a hold behind the speedy Zoustar duo of Schwarz and Mumbai Muse.

Group I VRC Australian Guineas winner Southport Tycoon caught the eye with a strong finishing third in his first trial back.

The first stakes-winner for Zousain, the Peter and Paul Snowden trained filly Drifting looked big and strong scoring a soft long neck win in her heat with Justify (USA) filly Lilac working home nicely for third.

Zousain has had a hot run in the past week and had another heat winner with the Jason Coyle trained Catch the Glory lining up for her second trial this prep and showed good improvement to win by a neck. She settled last in the run, but when brough to the outside and straightened up, she showed a good turn of foot to go straight past her rivals.

A $50,000 Magic Millions National Yearling purchase for her trainer from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft, Catch the Glory is the second foal of metro winning Tale of the Cat (USA) mare Catch that Cat, who traces back to the family of Golden slipper winner Star Watch.

Zoustar also had a heat winner with the Gary Portelli trained colt The Terminator leading all the way after crossing from a wide gate to win his 1200m heat by a long neck ay his second trial this prep.

Bred and retained to race by Trilogy Racing  after being passed in as a yearling, The Terminator is a full brother to a winner and is the third foal from stakes-placed import My Dinah Lee (USA.)

Additional 2YO  winners were: Babushka Miss (Russian Revolution), Couples Retreat (NZ) (Super Seth), Wal’s Me Mate (Headwater), West Indies (Fastnet Rock), Monte Veebee (Snitzel), Excelindeed (Exceed and Excel).
