Transforming Pregnant Mare Care with Equilume

Media Release - Tuesday July 23

Pregnant mares require attentive care to ensure the well-being of both mare and foal. Breeders can significantly enhance reproductive efficiency and foal development by providing proper nutrition, regular veterinary care, and optimal environmental conditions. While traditional practices remain crucial, for breeders looking to boost their breeding programs, Equilume's blue light technology offers an advanced approach to ensure the well-being of mares and foals, advancing reproductive efficiency and overall foal development.

Natural light exposure is a major component in regulating your mare’s stress-free environment as it plays a significant role in the reproductive cycle. Extended daylight hours stimulate the production of reproductive hormones and growth hormones, ensuring the health of both mare and foal. It is essential for maintaining a healthy pregnancy, foal development in utero, and improving milk production and colostrum. Long daylight consistency can be difficult to maintain during the reproductive cycle and this is where Equilume can help. Whether your mare is stabled, travelling to and from the vet, or at pasture, Equilume Light Masks provide consistent blue light to support your mare’s overall health.

Backed By Research

Research has shown that mares exposed to Equilume's blue light technology in the final 100 days of gestation have major benefits for both mare and foal. Presented at the Equine Symposium of the British Society for Animal Science’s Conference, research showing pregnant mares who wear blue light masks during the final 100 days of gestation had shorter pregnancies, earlier post-foaling ovulations, and produced stronger foals at birth. Conducted by the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, this study also found that foals from mares using light masks were 15 minutes faster at getting to their feet after birth compared to those from mares without additional light exposure. The study, conducted over two years at the Brandenburg State Stud in Germany, showed that blue-light-stimulated mares developed larger follicles in late gestation and could be bred sooner after foaling. Foals from these mares also had shorter hair coats, indicating the light perceived by the pregnant mare influences the foal's physical development in utero.

Supporting A Bright Future

Equilume's blue light technology is a straightforward and effective addition to your mare's care routine, providing a modern solution to complement traditional care practices, ensuring the best possible start for your foal and returning your mare to service, where necessary. For optimal results, Equilume advises starting blue light treatment on pregnant mares 100 days before their foaling due date. This strategic timing ensures that mares receive the full benefits of extended daylight exposure, promoting a healthy and productive breeding cycle, and improving overall outcomes for both mare and foal.

“Every year, Wentwood Grange foals down mares for ourselves and clients. We strive to find the best tools available so we can do the best job we can to deliver exceptional results.

The Equilume Light Masks are an invaluable tool to help pregnant mares foal on time ensuring a better chance of returning the mare for service within the same season. Our experience with Equilume has been remarkably successful, and we are committed to continuing using the Light Masks.”
