Nowhere to Hide

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday July 17

As stallions progress through their stud careers we learn more and more about them and a close look at the third season sires table is well worth consideration given the top 10 sires are all standing in either Australia or New Zealand this spring, albeit some not at the farms where they started.

Click for the fully interactive list and click on any sire for more info.

Topping the table are Yarraman Park’s Hellbent and Newgate Farm based Russian Revolution, who have been neck and neck with each other pretty much since the get go.

Hellbent, click for more info.

Russian Revolution stole an early march as Champion First and Second Crop sire, but Hellbent has kicked back to beat him this year thanks to a pair of outstanding Group I winning mares in Magic Time and Benedetta from his first crop, plus a slick two year-old in Fully Lit, who won the $2million Inglis Millennium.

Looking to the future for these two adversaries and Russian Revolution has a clear advantage in terms of quality in what stock he has coming through, so if Hellbent can keep pace with him it will be all the more meritorious.

Almanzor (IRE) at Cambridge Stud in New Zealand and Churchill (IRE) at Coolmore have both sired Group I winners in Australia this season among their four stakes-winners and are available this spring, while Impending and Merchant Navy have been churning out the winners and have also each produced a stakes-winner this season.

This Group I winning duo have both relocated from their original homes with Impending now at Larneuk Stud and Merchant Navy at Kooringal Stud.

Widden Stud’s bargain priced Supido got plenty of support after his first runners included Buenos Noches and has done enough to suggest there is better ahead with some good foal crops coming through, while Pariah has sired over 60 winners including two SWs and is another relocation horse moving to Oaklands Stud in Queensland.

I Am Invincible’s Overshare and Kobayashi have both had good seasons, the former siring his first Group I winner in Lady Laguna and the latter a string of juvenile winners in Queensland including a SW.

Overshare is a value option at Widden Victoria and Kobayashi has had a fee increase at Aquis in Queensland.
