Written Tycoon Filly Supercilious Breaks Maiden in Style

Mark Smith - Wednesday July 3

Leon and Troy Corstens thought enough of their Written Tycoon filly Supercilious to make her career in the Group II Blue Diamond Prelude in February.

After finishing midfield behind Hayasugi, Supercilious was off the scene for 18 weeks before a close-up fifth behind Blue Renegade at Sandown.

It primed her nicely for Wednesday’s Become An MRC Member Hcp (1300m) at Sandown-Hillside.

With Blake Shinn in the saddle, Supercilious defeated the talented Shamus Award filly Savvyrocker by a length, with the Lope de Vega filly Clean Reef back in third.

Stable representative Will Larkin was relieved after the $300,000 purchase for Malua Racing from the Newgate draft at the Magic Millions opened her winning account.

“She was a big purchase for us. We don’t spend that money too often, but Troy just loved her,” Larkin said.

“Luckily, we have good clients in Double R Thoroughbreds and the Morrissy family.

“Getting that win for the page is important, especially in town. She is well-bred and has a close relationship with some fast horses.

“She is a scopey filly that will get better when stretching out, and the 1300m is definitely a tick.”

Bred by China Horse Club Racing, SF Bloodstock, and Hollymount Stud, Supercilious is a three-quarter-sister to Group II MRC Rubiton Stakes winner Marine One (Capitalist) and Group III ATC Maurice McCarten Stakes winner Cannonball (Capitalist).

Her dam, Golconda, won the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes and was third in the Group 1 VRC Oaks.

A $400,000 purchase for China Horse Club at the 2015 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale, Golconda is a half-sister to Listed Cranbourne Cup winner Sermon (Octagonal) out of the Group II VRC Kewney Stakes and Group III AJC Adrian Knox Stakes winner Eureka Jewel.

Golconda was covered by Capitalist last spring.

Supercilious is the seventeenth 2-year-old winner of the season in Australia for Written Tycoon, with four winners in New Zealand.
