G1 Goals for Tavistock Mare

Media Release - Wednesday July 3

Talented and tenacious mare Town Cryer will be given every opportunity during her next preparation to break through at the highest level.

The daughter of Tavistock is a multiple black-type winner and was spelled by trainer Roydon Bergerson following her gallant effort to finish runner-up in the Gr.1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m).

“She’s been back in about five or six weeks now, she’s a really brave and tough mare,” Bergerson said.

“She’ll go to the Hawke’s Bay carnival and the track should have the cut out of it, it could be a wet spring and that will suit her.”

The first target on the wish list for Town Cryer is the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) with a return trip to Hastings planned for the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) and a yet to be determined outing between times.

“We’ll keep her fresh and she’ll have her first quiet gallop next week and then two trials before she goes to the Tarzino,” Bergerson said.

Town Cryer has seven victories to her credit, including the Gr.3 Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (1400m), the Listed Anzac Mile (1600m) and the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m).

The Awapuni trainer also has a southern feature in mind for Town Cryer’s stablemate Bradman.

“He’s going to the Winter Cup (Gr.3, 1600m) and hopefully Queen Of Spades as well, I’ll just see how she goes on Saturday,” Bergerson said.

Bradman was a winner at Trentham two runs back before he ran second in the Listed AGC Training Stakes (1600m) at Wanganui while five-time winner Queen Of Spades will be resuming in the Three Wise Birds Handicap (1200m) at Hastings.

“Bradman’s had a good season and he’ll run in the Opunake Cup (Listed, 1400m) and then hopefully onto the Winter Cup,” Bergerson said.

Meanwhile, Farravallo has proven a strong addition to the stable and will aim for two wins on the bounce in the Livamol Classic On Sale Now Handicap (1200m).

Previously prepared by Paul Richards, the three-year-old son of Belardo finished fifth in his first appearance for Bergerson before a front-running victory in an age group event on his return to Trentham last month.

“He has trained on really well since he won and he should have been closer on the first day down there,” Bergerson said.

“He got lost across the crossing and Lily (Sutherland) said he hesitated to take a couple of gaps.

“He seems to be happier when he’s rolling along in front so that’s probably going to be his position on Saturday. The rail will be right out so it might suit the frontrunners.”

Bergerson will also have representatives at his home meeting on Friday on the synthetic track and gave debutante Our Giulia an outside chance in The Pavemasters 1400.

“She ran last in a trial, but she has worked really well since and on the poly with the blinkers on she could be a roughie,” he said.
