Tenth Winner for Tassort

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday June 26

Newgate Farm’s exciting young sire Tassort notched a tenth winner from 26 starters at Warwick Farm on Wednesday when the Emirates Park homebred gelding Mawjood returned from a spell to win a competitive maiden despite a tough run in transit.

Sent to the paddock and gelded after a debut sixth behind boom colt Gatsbys in a strong maiden at Canterbury back in February, Team Hawkes would have been optimistic about his chances today following two very good efforts in recent trials.

He bolted in at the Rosehill trials last week with Zac Lloyd in the saddle and the same rider took the reins today for an impressive win.

Cast three and four deep the trip after jumping from a wide draw, Lloyd allowed Mawjood to travel where he was happy and after turning for home he found the line with a good turf of foot to win the 1100m dash by more than a length over the short priced Godolphin favourite Tarpaulin.

uo;I was taken with his trial and it’s good to see him come and do that here today,” said Lloyd.

“We were three and four wide the whole way with no cover so he had to tough it out all the way. He’s only going to get better with time.”

A homebred for Emirates Park, Mawjood is a half-brother to Group III placed Mayaaseh and is the third winner from metro winner Maysoon, who sadly died last year.

Tassort

Mawjood is the tenth winner for Tassort, whose winners are headed by Group I winning filly Manaal and stakes-placed Ameena and Ad Astra.

Standing at Newgate in conjunction with Emirates Park, Tassort was the busiest sire in Australia last year covering 232 mares at a fee of $11,000 and has had a big increase this year and will stand for $38,500.
