Juvenile Trial Watch – Rosehill

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday June 11

There were eight heats won by juveniles at the Rosehill trials on Tuesday morning including a couple of unraced youngsters by Written Tycoon and Too Darn Hot (GB), plus a very flashy Exceed and Excel colt that looks to have come back in great shape.

The James Cummings trained Gram impressed at his trials last spring and then finished third on debut over 900m in the Max Lees Classic to Erno’s Cube, who ended up winning the Group II ATC Reisling Stakes. He’s obviously had some issues that havekept him out of action until now, but with two recent trials under his belt looks ready to go racing.

Gram is a full brother to Group III winning juvenile Zulfiqar, but unlike his brother, who is a relatively plain bay, Gram has picked up the flashy chestnut colouring of Golden Slipper winning sire Rory’s Jester, who appears back in his pedigree. His dam Sayf Shamal (USA) is a Northern Hemisphere bred daughter of slick Group II winning juvenile Alizes (also chestnut with baldy face), the grand-dam of Godolphin superstars Alizee and Astern.

The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Written Tycoon filly Written Scandal had a very enjoyable experience at her first outing. She crossed from an outside gate for Tyler Shiller to track the leader and easily moved to the lead on straightening to win with ears pricked under a hold, too easy for this girl!

A $320,000 Magic Millions purchase for Australian Bloodstock/Snowden Racing/William Johnson Bloodstock  from Arrowfield Stud, Written Scandalis the second foal of well bred import Scandaleuse (USA), a winning War Front daughter of Group I Winner Aruna with the next two dams also stakes-winners, so quality not lacking on the pedigree front.

Champion trainer Chris Waller is never in a rush to get two year-olds to the races and while Swelter has been in and out of work and had more than several trials, this one would indicate a race day may be on the horizon. At her previous trial last month she was asked for nothing and ran last, this time with blinkers on she was asked for something and had an answer surging to the line to win by a length and a half running away.

A $410,000 Magic Millions purchase for Magic Bloodstock/Noel & Maria Greenhalgh/Julia Ritchie/Neil Werrett from Segenhoe Stud, Swelter has the pedigree to suggest three year-old success as she is from Boorooj, a winning half-sister by Exceed and Excel to Group I SAJC Australasian Oaks winner Invest from Group I ATC Flight Stakes winner Unearthly.

Additional winners were: Customized (Capitalist), Kingdom Underseige (I Am Invincible), Mawjood (Tassort), Caravanseria (Blue Point (IRE) and She Conquers (Unite and Conquer).
