Second Group One Winner for Foxwedge

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 1
Newgate Farm's foundation sire Foxwedge sired his second Group I winner in New Zealand on New Year's Day when his high class daughter Volpe Veloce scored a well-deserved victory at the elite level.

Visiting Australian jockey Jake Bayliss celebrated his biggest career win when he drove four year-old Volpe Veloce to victory in the Group I Sistema Railway (1200m) at Ellerslie.

Bayliss has created plenty of attention with his immediate success since arriving in New Zealand on a short-term contract for the summer. The Victorian based jockey has made no secret of his desire to ride his first Group I winner and he achieved the feat in style on New Year's Day with a copybook performance on the talented mare.

Volpe Veloce - images Trish DunnellAlthough the race had been depleted by several late scratchings due to the downgrade in track conditions, the battle for the early lead was keenly fought as the well fancied Melody Belle and Fully Funded vied for the pacemaking role.

Despite jumping well Bayliss soon found himself near the rear on Volpe Veloce as runners jostled to find a position of advantage.

Bayliss bided his time and set the mare alight approaching the home corner where last year's winner, Start Wondering, had taken control. Searching for better ground out wide, Volpe Veloce headed out after Start Wondering who was fighting on strongly at the 200m mark.

Volpe Veloce extended strongly to snatch the lead before holding off the fast finishing Packing Eagle to win by a length and a half.

"This means the world to me," said Bayliss.

"Limited opportunities have stopped me getting success like this, but I've been working hard since I came to New Zealand.

"I've tried to put my best foot forward and Graham Richardson has stuck by me in a big race like this.

"I'm now a Group One winning jockey, but I just can't explain the feeling."

Emotions were running high in the Ellerslie birdcage as Richardson and co-trainer Gavin Parker waited with the mare's large group of owners for the pair to make their winning return.

"It's amazing isn't it," said Richardson. "She deserves it, the owners deserve it and so does Gavin Parker.

"He's done an enormous job, along with the staff, so congratulations to everybody."

Richardson admitted the victory had special meaning after he emulated his first win in the race with Kailey back in 1997.

"I won it 21 years ago and I have had a couple of seconds, so this means the world to me," he said.

"We're going to celebrate today and then bring on the Telegraph.

"We might even go to the Newmarket in Australia as Jake seems to think she is up to it so after a run like that, on ground she doesn't handle, who knows."

Volpe Veloce as a foal at Newgate The victory took the mare's record to 10 wins from just 13 career starts and she remains unbeaten at Ellerslie with four wins from four starts as well as at the distance where she is six from six.

She will now tackle the Group I JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) which will be held at Trentham on January 20.

A $240,000 Karaka yearling purchase from the Lyndhurst Farm draft, Volpe Veloce was a successful pinhook for Lyndhurst having been bought for $120,000 at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from the Newgate Farm draft.

Bred by Nick and Amy Vass, she was foaled and raised at Newgate Farm and is a half-sister to stakes-winner Delago Bolt.

She is the fourth winner from Group III winner Bardego, who was on-sold in 2015 for $46,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale with Randwick Bloodstock the buyer for Rushton Park.

Rushton Park will offer her current yearling filly by Helmet at Magic Millions as Lot 531.

Foxwedge has sired seven stakes-winners to date headed by his Group I winning fillies Foxplay and now Volpe Veloce. The Group I winning son of Fastnet Rock has good representation at upcoming sales with 16 entries for Magic Millions, 13 for Inglis Classic, 11 for Inglis Premier and 7 for NZB Premier. NZ Racing Desk.
