Frankel Superstar to Shuttle to Cambridge Stud

Tara Madgwick - Friday April 19

Juddmonte’s newest recruit to their European stallion roster, Chaldean (GB), will shuttle to Cambridge Stud in New Zealand for the 2024 Southern Hemisphere season.

Chaldean will shuttle to Cambridge Stud and stand at a fee of $35,000 plus GST

As the international interest in Frankel continues to grow, Juddmonte welcomes the opportunity to stand Chaldean at one of the world’s most iconic stud farms and provide Southern Hemisphere breeders access to one of Frankel’s most exciting and precocious sons to retire to stud to date.

A G1 winner at two and three, Chaldean emulated his sire, becoming only the ninth colt in the last 50 years to complete the Dewhurst-Guineas double and are the only father-son duo to complete the Dewhurst-Guineas double ever.

A stunning looking son of Frankel, Chaldean was purchased by Juddmonte at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 550,000 guineas and proved a brilliant juvenile winning four of five starts at two.

He famously lost his rider in his seasonal return in the Group III Greenham Stakes before bouncing back to win the Group I Newmarket Two Thousand Guineas giving champion jockey Frankie Dettori a final win in the time honoured classic.

A dominating force on the world stage, Frankel is also making a huge impression in Australasia.

In 2023 alone, Frankel sired 11 Group One winners, 27 Group winners and 42 stakes winners, more than any other stallion in the world. From Frankel’s 90 runners in Australia and New Zealand to date, 25 (28%) are stakes horses, 17 (19%) are stakes winners and 12 (13%) are Group winners. These remarkable statistics have driven demand in the sales ring where mares in-foal to Frankel in 2023 were secured for an average of A$807,083 for 12 sold.

Chaldean was a G1 winner at two and three retiring with five wins and a second from 10 starts.

“The exceptionally talented, good-looking Chaldean has been immensely popular during his first season at Banstead Manor Stud. With the ongoing support for Frankel and his incomparable statistics as they stand, Cambridge Stud have given us the perfect opportunity to send Chaldean to the Southern Hemisphere where we feel his precociousness and physical type will appeal. We look forward to working with the team at the internationally renowned Cambridge Stud ahead of the Southern Hemisphere season,” said Simon Mockridge, General Manager UK, Juddmonte.

Cambridge Stud are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring an elite son of Frankel to the Southern Hemisphere and he comes with an impressive female pedigree being the best of six winners from blue hen Suelita, whose offspring also include Group II winner Alkumait and stakes-winners The Broghie Man and Get Ahead, who sold as a broodmare prospect in 2023 for 2.5million guineas.

“Cambridge Stud is delighted to secure the services of Chaldean for the New Zealand breeding industry.  His pedigree, with a strong emphasis on two and three-year-old speed is perfect for our market and racing program. He is a magnificent type, and his conformation will be enthusiastically received by Australasian breeders,” said Henry Plumptre, Cambridge Stud’s CEO.

“Having a signature Group 1 at two, the Dewhurst Stakes and a three-year-old Classic, the 2,000 Guineas, to his name makes him an extremely attractive prospect. His sire, Frankel, is currently breaking all records as a stallion and the opportunity to secure his best two-year-old was a significant drawcard for us.”

Chaldean is an exciting addition for New Zealand breeders.

Under the ownership of Brendan and Jo Lindsay, Cambridge Stud has surged into a new era of success with the Juddmonte partnership holding great promise for the future.

“Jo and I are very proud of the Cambridge Stud brand and welcome the opportunity of joining forces with a global brand like Juddmonte. We thank Juddmonte and their team for affording us this opportunity. We are excited to be able to offer an exceptional horse like Chaldean to our client base,” said Brendan Lindsay.

Chaldean will stand for a fee of $35,000 + GST and be limited to 120 mares.
