Yulong Wear Vendor’s Hat in 2024

Tara Madgwick - Thursday April 18

The evolution of the Yulong brand has been of huge interest to the global bloodstock industry and particularly in Australia where they’ve been more active as sellers than buyers during the first part of this year, so we’re taking a closer look at Yulong wearing their vendor’s hat.

Last year they cut a swathe through yearling and breeding stock sales as buyers, but for this story we’ll stick to statistics relevant to the purchase and sale of yearlings.

In 2023, Yulong purchased 32 yearlings at Inglis Easter and Magic Millions for a combined total of $16.9million and this year they have wound that right back signing for just seven yearlings at Magic Millions under their alternate Highway Farm alias for $4.7million.

At the same time as reducing their purchase of yearlings, Yulong have ramped up their presence as vendors offering drafts at every major sale – Magic Millions Gold Coast, Inglis Classic, Inglis Premier, MM Adelaide and Inglis Easter.

This $900,000 Written Tycoon filly from Another Dollar was the highest priced yearling sold by Yulong in 2024.

They have sold 147 yearlings across these sales for a grand total of $21.9million and passed in just 24 giving them a clearance of 85%, so they are obviously committed to the cause.

The vast majority of yearlings they offered were by their own stallions with a break up of how that played out across all sales below and they also sold five by the world’s best stallion Frankel. There were also two by Pierata, although he only joined their stallion roster last year and these two yearlings were both purchased as weanlings last year and resold for virtually the same price.

Yulong sold a mix of colts and fillies with the Top 10 most expensive listed below and they were purchased by a wide variety of buyers.

Leading trainers Gai Waterhouse /Adrian Bott, Ciaron Maher and Annabel Neasham all purchased three Yulong yearlings each as did Te Akau boss David Ellis, while Tom Magnier was the only representative of the ‘stallion syndicates’ buying group to dip a toe in Yulong waters.
