Godolphin Mourn the Loss of Beaded

Clinton Payne - Thursday December 21

She will be remembered as a pocket-dynamo but sadly one of Australia's best performed race mares of recent times died earlier this month.

Five-time stakes winner Beaded died at Godolphin's Hunter Valley property on December 1.

"Unfortunately, we lost her foaling and we lost the foal as well," John Sunderland, general manager of Godolphin Woodlands, said.

"It was one of those things that's non-selective and we were unable to save her or the foal by Medaglia d'Oro."

LonhroBeaded was one of the early flagship horses for champion resident stallion Lonhro.

From the second crop, the 2005 foal won 10 of her 27 starts for the then trainer at Darley, Peter Snowden, earning more than $1.6 million.

Beaded's biggest win came in the 2011 Doomben 10,000. She also placed in another seven Group I races.

"She was a real fighter," Sunderland said. "She wasn't a big mare but she was as tough as nails."

Since her retirement in 2012, Beaded left three live foals including her last living foal, an Exceed And Excel filly born last year.

"As a race horse she didn't exactly endear herself to many, biting a few people in her time, but when she retired onto the farm she developed into a brilliant mum," Sutherland said.

"She was a lovely mare up here from day one.

"We have a filly by Exceed And Excel at the moment and she's a real chip of the block. Not overly big but has plenty of spirit so hopefully in the future she can carry on where mum left off.

"She'll be missed."
