Camelot Filly Spirit Of Camelot on the Stakes Trail

Mark Smith - Wednesday April 3

An imported 3-year-old daughter of Camelot (IRE) winning over 1000m augers well for the future of Spirit Of Camelot (IRE), who is likely to step straight up to stakes class following her win in the Haymarket Maiden Plate at Ballarat on Wednesday.

The second winner on the day for Michael Hickmott and Jamie Kah, Spirit Of Camelot overpowered the Press Statement colt Mr Assertive by a half-length with Telperion filly Porrista three and a quarter lengths back in third.

Hickmott said that the filly took a lot from her debut run when a beaten favourite at Murray Bridge on March 20.

“She got a little lost late but this is a filly I have an enormous opinion of,” Hickmott said.

“She is a 16th of March foal, I think, so she has just turned three by birth date.

“I have indicated to the team that this is a filly going to big and better places.

“Jessica has done a lot of work on her this time since her return from injury, and Todd rode her during her previous preparation. They also have a huge opinion of her.

“She is a beautiful filly, and when she walked two laps of the mounting yard, Jamie pointed out that she will be a beautiful filly when her wither catches up with her hind end.

“The way she settled today, we might go to 1400m with her. I’ll speak with  Jason (Stenning) and Sean (Dingwall) over the next couple of days because there is the Nitschke Stakes in Adelaide in a few weeks over 1400m that might be there for her. We’ll see what Jamie says.”

Spirit Of Camelot was a €75,000 purchase for Mckeever Bloodstock/CB Bloodstock from the Parkway Farm consignment at the 2021 Goff November Foal Sale.

She is the second foal of the winning Iffraaj mare Tough Spirit, whose dam One Spirit Invincible Spirit is a Listed winner and multiple Group III-placed.

This is the family of the champion sprinter Diktat and the outstanding miler and sire Cape Cross.
