Distance Sire Tables Paint a Picture

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday March 26

Breednet is the only place where you can see distance sire tables that highlight the merits of stallions according to the distance aptitude of their progeny which pits apples against apples rather than apples against oranges.

What you tend to see is a completely different set of stallions coming to the fore in the last two tables where the distance rises from 1600m to 2000m and 2000m and beyond, so let’s take a look at the landscape.

I Am Invincible rules the roost with more than double the prizemoney of the next sire and that sire So You Think is there by virtue of his outstanding sprinter Think About It, who won last year’s Everest.

Looking at this table at this time of year brings in all the big juvenile winners up to this point so no surprise to see Written Tycoon riding high and also Hellbent, who sired Fully Lit to win the Inglis Millennium.

We see the same four sires at the top of the list, but also we see stallions like Pride of Dubai, Sebring, Savabeel and Dundeel starting to come to light.

Miler Middle Distance

This is where we see the big changeover as I Am Invincible and Zoustar slide down the list with very few of their progeny successful beyond a mile at the elite level, but they remain in the Top 10, while Pride of Dubai hits his sweet spot to surge to the top. With big money races still to come in this category over The Championships change will be coming to this list.

Middle Distance Staying

This table highlights the reason why Australia struggles to produce quality middle distance/ stayers with only two of the top 10 stallions currently standing in Australia and they are Dundeel and So You Think, who is the only stallion to appear in the Top 10 of all four sire tables.

If all of our elite mares are being covered by the big gun commercial sires such as I Am Invincible, Snitzel, Zoustar and Written Tycoon it is very unlikely Australia will be producing elite WFA middle distance horses any time soon. European tried horse sales will remain the premium source for these types of horses for a very long time to come.
