Last Winner for a Breeding Legend

A Terang meeting on a Monday is not the sort of place I usually look for an interesting breeding story, but a comment on Twitter this morning drew my attention to the win of this filly, who is certainly worth a mention as she is the last foal of a mare we'd all love to own.

Retained by her South Australian based breeder David Peacock, who races her in partnership, three year-old Teofilo (IRE) filly Truly Discreet scored a three quarter length win over 1200 metres for the Dan O'Sullivan stable.

Group II winner Serenely Discreet is a star member of the family - Grant CourtneyUnplaced in three runs over the winter, she has obviously returned a better filly and was sent out favourite and duly saluted.

Champion she is probably not, but winner she most definitely is and in so doing, she has kept the perfect record of her now retired dam She's Discreet.

A Group III winner by Euclase, She's Discreet was also bred by Mr Peacock and has produced 13 foals, all of whom are now winners.

The best of them are stakes-winners Very Discreet, Forever Discreet and I'm Discreet, the dam of Group II VRC Edward Manifold Stakes winner Serenely Discreet.

The commercial worth of this branch of the 'Discreet' family was highlighted last year when Forever Discreet was bought by Spendthrift Australia for $520,000 at the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale, while China Horse Club paid $520,000 for her half-sister Why Be Discreet at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Leading South Australian nursery Mill Park Stud will offer two yearlings on behalf of Mr Peacock at the upcoming Magic Millions Yearling Sale next month from this family.

Lot 420 – A colt by Dawn Approach (IRE) from stakes-winning Exceed and Excel mare Very Discreet, already the dam of three winners highlighted by South African Group I placed colt Naafer.

Lot 816 – A colt by Brazen Beau from stakes-winning Elusive Quality (USA) mare I'm Discreet, the dam of Group II winner Serenely Discreet.

For a mare to deliver 13 foals that are all named and all go on to win a race is an amazing achievement.
As all breeders know, the process of breeding a foal and then having it go on to win a race anywhere is frequently a long and bumpy road often filled with pitfalls of a bewildering nature, so to have 13 foals that all win fits in the freakish realm.

We recently ran a hugely popular story highlighting the success of Procrastinate, whose 12th winner (from 15 foals to race) Impulsivewarranted this story.

And going back in time I remember the Woodlands Stud / Darley mare Peach also had a phenomenal produce record leaving 11 winners from 12 foals to race highlighted by Group I winners Denman and Preserve with another stakes-winner Rio Osa falling in between.
