Raise The Flag's Broadside Romps in ATC Cup

Mark Smith - Saturday December 2

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott sent out three of the seven starters in Saturday's Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill and they made quite a sight being three abreast in the lead coming around the home turn.

As Savapinski and Fabrizio began to drop off, it was left to the Newcastle Cup winner Broadside, under Tim Clark, who kept up a strong gallop to turn back the challenge of the Lauri Wray-trained Lord Kingsley (I Am Invincible) by two lengths with the Chris Waller-trained Montauk (More Than Ready) two and a quarter lengths back in third. His overall record advances to 6 wins, 1 second and 2 thirds from 13 starts with earnings of $295,601.

"He's an older horse that never went out of work. He's been down to Melbourne and come back to Sydney for this race," Waterhouse said.

"He's been a very honest horse, wonderfully consistent, and it's lovely to see him win today.

"There's a few nice cups coming up for him so there's no reason why he shouldn't be running in those."

A brother to the lightly raced winner Constant Barrage, Broadside is the second foal of the Straight Strike mare Anam Cara but you need to go back five generations to find the most recent stakes winner.

Anam Cara was not served in 2014 and missed in 2015. She was covered by Pentire (GB) last spring.

Broadside is a son of White Robe Stud's royally-bred Sadler's Wells stallion Raise The Flag who is out of the wonder broodmare Hasili. He is a half-brother to multiple Group 1 winners Banks Hill, Heat Haze, Intercontinental, Cacique, Champs Elysees as well as the champion stallion Dansili.

Raise The Flag stands the 2017 season at a fee of $4,000 +GST.
