Boom Torque’s meteoric rise through the ranks under trainer Matt Dunn continued at the Gold Coast on Saturday with a thrilling win in the $1 million Racing Queensland Magic Millions QTIS Open (1300m).
The four-year-old raced wide and gave the leaders a start but once jockey Mick Dee asked him to quicken, he reeled in the likes of Rothfire, Better Get Set and Chinny Boom with consummate ease.
Initially purchased for $50,000 out of the Glenlogan Park draft at the 2021 Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, the son of Spirit of Boom changed hands and joined Dunn’s stable in mid-2023.

He’s now won four of his five starts for the Murwillumbah horseman, who has won lucrative Magic Millions races in recent years with Care To Think and Madotti.Dunn thanked Boom Torque's owner Ian Corazzol and paid tribute to the gelding's tenacity.
“He came to us a little while ago and he’s gone from strength to strength,” Dunn said.
“Let me say this, Ian Corazzol, the guy that sent him to us, has been a massive supporter of mine.
“Since he’s come into the stable he keeps chiming in with shares in horses and he’s been a really good asset to the place and I’m so pleased he could get the job done with this horse.
“He’s done a good job today – he was three and four deep the trip and he did all the work but he’s a real competitor.”
Victorian jockey Mick Dee said the horse’s electric turn of foot will hold him in good stead as he continues to step up in grade.
“I’m lucky that I’ve been able to pick up the nice, light ride,” Dee said.
“It certainly looked a big step up in class coming here today but that turn of foot, it’s pretty incredible.
“To pick up the leader like he did, it was a super effort.”
Dunn has been involved in six purchases so far at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, including a Microphone colt (Lot 186) from the draft of Boom Torque's breeder Glenlogan Park.
He also bought colts by Shamus Award, Toronado and Too Darn Hot, as well as a rig by Farnan and a filly by Star Turn.
