First season sires add much intrigue to Magic Millions as buyers get their first look at a whole new cohort of young stallions and Darley’s Champion Sprinter Bivouac had a big result late on Tuesday when the Mill Park consigned filly from Secretly Discreet sold for $675,000.
From the famed ‘Discreet’ family nurtured by South Australian breeder David Peacock through generations, this lovely bay filly was purchased by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock.
She is the second foal of winning Lonhro mare Secretly Discreet, a daughter of Group I SAJC Australasian Oaks winner Maybe Discreet from the family of Group winners Be Discreet, Just Discreet, She’s Discreet and Serenely Discreet. She is bred on Exceed and Excel x Lonhro nick that has been highly successful with the two champion sires combining in the pedigrees of 22 SW’s.
“She’s very much an athlete, strong, great through the hocks walking away from you and felt that she’d be a filly that could come back and compete next year as a two-year-old and obviously Mill Park are great breeders,” said Will Bourne, bloodstock manager for Ciaron Maher.
“(It’s a) first-season sire in Bivouac, but on that Lonhro/Exceed (And Excel) cross – she’s out of a Lonhro mare – which has proven so potent, across the board we felt it was a measured play.”
Bourne offered his thoughts on the types Bivouac is producing.
“They’re not heavy horses. They’re leaner more athletic types, but I think that is going to be advantageous to get them to the races at two,” he said.
“Ciaron’s dominant horses have been lighter types, like Coolangatta, they don’t take a lot of training so I’m hoping it enables her to get back here next year.”
Ciaron Maher has had notable success with Mill Park previously having trained the 2020 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Away Game, who came out of their draft in 2019 for $425,000.
Secretly Discreet produced a filly by Farnan last spring.
A triple Group I winning sprinter by Exceed and Excel, Bivouac stands at a fee of $66,000, so is the most expensive of the Australian bred first season sires represented at this sale.
