Juvenile Trial Watch – Canterbury

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 9

There were seven heats for juveniles over 899m at Canterbury on Tuesday morning with spring stakes-winners Bodyguard and Manaal both stepping out for the first time in 2024 and we also saw two heat winners by first season sire Pierata and one for Cosmic Force.

Most impressive winner by a country mile was Written Tycoon filly Lady of Camelot, who was the fastest and also the most visually impressive strolling home to win by nine lengths in 53.17 seconds.

A close fourth on debut in the Group III ATC Gimcrack Stakes in the spring, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly has obviously come back in great shape and looks set to become a stakes-winner for her breeder Sir Owen Glenn like her older half-sisters Platinum Jubilee and Queen of the Ball.

Tassort filly Manaal, who won the Gimcrack for Michael Freedman, returned with a quiet effort in her heat, surging to the line under a hold to finish third to Pierata filly Wavebreaker, who is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden.

Expensive I Am Invincible colt Bodyguard looked good in his heat, allowed to find his feet early and powering home late to finish second to his Peter and Paul Snowden trained stablemate Fearless, a colt by Pierata that was fourth in debut in the G3 Breeders Plate.

Additional trial winners were: Force Red (Cosmic Force), High Octane (Deep Field), Prost (Snitzel) and Alinea (Written Tycoon).
