Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Monday December 11

Randwick trials on Monday morning featured four heats that were won by some interesting horses including the half-sister to multiple Group I winner Hartnell and two of the winners have siblings in upcoming sales.

There was one heat over 1050m, with the remainder over 740m and the longer heat was won by the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Capitalist colt Customized in the James Harron Bloodstock colours. It was his third trial and second this prep, so he’s had a good education and did everything right here, albeit was in a muck lather of sweat compared to his rivals.

A $400,000 Magic Millions purchase from Newgate, he is the second foal of winning Not a Single Doubt mare Single Sapphire, who comes from the family of Group II winner Twilight Royale, the dam of last week’s Group II MRC Sandown Guineas winner Serasana. Her third foal is a Capitalist colt going to Magic Millions as Lot 197.

The quickest of the shorter heats was won by Breeders Plate place-getter Straight Charge, who was having his second trial this prep and Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott will no doubt be thinking Gold Coast with this talented son of Written By. He travelled wide and was too good for expensive Snitzel colt Trunk, who was also second to him in his previous trial.

The half-sister by Zoustar to Hartnell, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly Dominetta showed good improvement from her first trial to her second and hit the line with good determination suggesting she will have a lot more to offer over a little further. Runner-up Fully Lit went well and is a half-sister to last season’s juvenile stakes-winner The Novelist.

A $500,000 Magic Millions purchase from Arrowfield, Dominetta is raced in partnership by Arrowfield and US based Mt Brilliant Broodmares.

Per Incanto (USA) filly Photographics had the advantage of barrier one and was able to make use of it to hold the fence and the John Sargent trained filly was tenacious to the line holding a narrow margin over a wall of pursuers including blue-blood Frankel colt Format. He’s a three-quarter brother to Group winning stayers Harpo Marx and Forbearance and is the first Australian foal for his Group I winning dam Nechita who started her stud career in Ireland.

Photographics has a full sister to be offered at K2 as Lot 818 by Little Avondale Stud.
