Top bets from The Armchair Punter

Stephen Brassel - Thursday October 19

I'm keen to have a crack at the Caulfield Cup and the overall Caulfield meeting while there looks one good thing at Randwick early we can bolster the tank with.

While the Abbey may be in ruins I doubt our finances will be after Caulfield on Saturday.

KAONIC (Randwick Race 2 No 6)
He's only short but loved the way he's been hitting the line and will relish the wide-open spaces of the Randwick 1600m. Last time at Canterbury was held up and looked no hope over 1550m when the leader was eight lengths clear on the turn but motored home to win running away. Savabeel gelding who is going places and he looks a good one for a 'banker'.
BET: WIN
ODDS: $3 @ Bet365

TAVISTOCK ABBEY (Caulfield Race 4 No.7)
Lightly raced son of Tavistock who made it two in a row with a narrow victory beating Main Stage over 1800m at Flemington last time out. Main Stage franked the form with an impressive win over the same course and distance at his next outing. They meet again here and I see no reason why Tavistock Abbey can't repeat the dose again now they go to 2000m and he's a better price!
BET: WIN
ODDS: $5.50 @ Ladbrokes ($6.50 Odds Boost), Sportsbet ($6.50 Power Play)

KIWIA (Caulfield Race 5 No 10)
Lightly raced four-year-old who was unsuited around Murtoa last time when he powered home for third after successive wins at Ballarat and Caulfield. Takes on some tough opposition but he's a progressive type and dropping 6.5kg here he's well worth the gamble at a track he's won two-from-three at.
BET: WIN
ODDS: $7.50 @ CrownBet

PROPERTY (Caulfield Race 7 No 10)
I've always had a good wrap on this Robert Smerdon-trained galloper and judging by his recent trial win at Cranbourne the three-year-old appears ready to go for this 1000m assignment. Winner three of his five starts and has always promised to go to the next level since making his debut when second to Catchy as a juvenile. Drawn nicely enough in five and with a ton of speed from Super Too and Snitty Kitty should just sit back and charge late.
BET: WIN
$4.40 @ Ladbrokes ($4.80 Odds Boost)

JOHANNES VERMEER (Caulfield Race 8 No 3)
Had the flashing light when storming home for second in the Caulfield Stakes last week and his previous form would suggest the import shouldn't be affected by the quick back-up. Draw could be the only concern as he'll get back off the speed a little and will need some luck but banking on clear running from the turn and expecting he'll be getting the money.
BET: WIN
ODDS: $4.40 Neds ($5.25 Bet Boost)
