Coco Sun Second Stakes Winner for The Autumn Sun

Mark Smith - Saturday July 15

The Autumn Sun filly Coco Sun stayed perfect at two for two when opening her stakes account in Saturday's Listed Oaklands Plate (1400m) at Morphettville Parks.

Ridden by Ben Price for Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Coco Sun disposed of Deadly Press (Press Statement) and the od-on favourite Dubenenko (Russian Revolution) with the minimum of fuss, defeating Deadly Press by one and three-quarter lengths with a short-head back to Dubenenko in third.

Coco Sun made a winning debut over 1350m on a heavy track at Geelong on June 30.

It was a fifth win in the race for Tony McEvoy, who said it was the perfect spot to claim black-type.

"I was a bit nervous at the 500m when Benny let the favourite out; I thought ', what's he doing here', but the filly was good enough to overcome it once she balanced up," Tony McEvoy said.

t;We have a lot of time for her. We have thought for a while that she is a filly that could figure in the spring. That was a great step today.

"If you look at the Geelong race, she was five and six wide, facing the breeze the whole way. She did an incredible job and ran the fastest 400m and 600m of the day.

"Her pedigree says that she will get further. I think we will protect her now, back off and give her a chance to digest it all.

"I am so excited for Terry Jarvis, who decided to buy the filly off us, and she is a ripper going forward."

Coco Sun a $250,000 Inglis Classic yearling

Bred by Wallings Bloodstock, Coco Sun was a $250,000 purchase for McEvoy Mitchell Racing / Belmont Bloodstock (FBAA) from the Tyreel Stud draft at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

She is the third winner from four to race for the Encosta de Lago mare Miss Hufflepuff, who was a $470,000 purchase for Belmont Bloodstock (FBAA)/Tyreel Stud from the  Rothwell Park draft at the 2017 National Broodmare Sale.

A sister to the champion Hong Kong stayer Liberator and stakes-placed Pink Siris (the dam of Group II BRC The Roses winner Etana and stakes-placed Echo Gal), Miss Hufflepuff has a yearling Yes Yes Yes filly, which was a $30,000 purchase for Stephen O'Halloran at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

After foaling a So You Think filly last spring, Miss Hufflepuff missed to Hellbent.

Coco Sun is the second stakes-winner for Arrowfield Stud's The Autumn Sun, which stands for $66,000.
