On Wednesday, the three-year-old Capitalist gelding Kapunda gained a late split to deny the two-year-old I Am Invincible colt Immortal Island a winning debut in the Bivouac @ Darley Maiden Hcp (1150) at Randwick-Kensington.
Ridden by Jett Stanley for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, Kapunda was desperate to find clear air for all but the final 100m. He overpowered the $650,000 Inglis Easter purchase Immortal Island by a head, with the three-year-old Zosuatr filly Parmenio a half-length back in third.
Kapunda opened his winning account at his third start and is already in the black, having been a $22,500 weanling Polaris Bloodstock when offered by Newgate Farm at the 2020 Inglis May Online Sale.
“It was a hard watch from the start as the plan was to be positive,” assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord said.
“Jett was patient as he had to go back to plan B.
“He was a touch keen at Kembla, and he learnt from that. He is very straightforward and open to improvement; hopefully, there are more to come."
A half-brother to stakes-placed winner Old Trieste (Hinchinbrook), Kapunda is the seventh winner from as many to race for the stakes-placed Choisir mare Love’s Great.
Out of a half-sister to the dam of Kobayashi (I Am Invincible), Love’s Great was a $1,250 purchase for Platinum Thoroughbreds at the 2020 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale.
She has a yearling colt by the Charm Spirit (IRE) stallion Scorpz and was covered by him again last spring.
