Ones to Watch – Bjorn Baker and Darby Racing

Tara Madgwick - Thursday May 25

Bjorn Baker saddled two interesting debut juvenile winners on Thursday, one is an eye-catching Zoustar colt that has been impressing at the trials and the other is a Vancouver gelding with Overpass vibes and both carry the colours of Darby Racing.

Ozzmosis was sent out favourite in an 1100m maiden at Gosford taking on older horses and with champion jockey James McDonald on board powered clear for an easy two length win.

A $250,000 Magic Millions purchase for Darby Racing from the Sledmere Stud draft, Ozzmosis was bred by China Horse Club and is the second winner from No More Tears (NZ), a Group III winning Darci Brahma mare from the family of Group II winners Hips Don’t Lie, Splintex and this season’s star juvenile Learning to Fly.

Back in 2021, Bjorn Baker sent a promising juvenile to Orange to break his maiden and that was $3.9 million earning Vancouver gelding Overpass, so when he did the same thing with another son of Vancouver at Bathurst on Thursday it caught the eye.

Canadian Ruler was a hot favourite in the 1200m maiden and beat older rivals to win by a length.

A $75,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from the Westbury Stud draft for Darby Racing, Canadian Ruler is the second winner from Sovereign Eminence, a winning half-sister by Testa Rossa to Group II winner Sovereign Nation from the family of Champion NZ 3YO Filly Princess Coup.
