Yu Long Swoop on $3.4million Montefilia

Tara Madgwick - Thursday May 4

Offered in the Newgate Consignment, four-time Group I winner Montefilia was offered as a breeding and racing proposition at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale with Yu Long adding another gem to their star studded broodmare band at $3.4million.

Trained by David Payne, Montefilia has been racing well during the autumn with Group I seconds in both the ATC Tancred Stakes and Ranvet Stakes taking her overall record earnings in excess of $3.2million.

Montefilia sells for $3.4million.

“She’s got a lot of quality and is a lovely mover,” Sam Fairgray told Jemma Cutting of Inglis.

“We’re not sure what we’ll do with her just yet, although she may race on in the spring with races like the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup all possible.”

Purchased by her trainer for $130,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Montefilia is a half-sister by Kermadec to Group III placed Nice for What from Group II placed Monsun mare Bana Wu (GB).

Part-owner Hugh Docherty spoke to Jemma Cutting after the sale and it was a bittersweet moment.

“We found her as a yearling and David Payne was on board when he saw her and said ‘I’ll win an Oaks with her’ and she should have,” said Docherty.

“She’s the most beautiful mare with the most lovely temperament, hopefully we might buy one of her foals one day.”
